We have seen the rental boom hit all retail items from DVD’s to purses. Now a new company has come out with renting cell phones to consumers on a monthly basis.

Take a look….

Consumers longing to try out the latest mobile devices—whether for fashion or for function—must typically wait for their current contract to expire before trying something new. Aiming to make it possible to sample both more widely and more often, Rentobile provides a wide selection of the latest cell phones for rent on a monthly basis.

Users begin by deciding if they want to become a Rentobile member or simply rent as a guest. Membership rates begin at USD 5 per month; in exchange, members enjoy the site’s lowest rental rates and other privileges. They then browse Rentobile’s collection—including sections for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon as well as unlocked models—and choose which they’d like to try out first. All models are either new or in like-new condition, Rentobile says, with monthly rental rates beginning at about USD 15. Consumers can rent the device of their choice for as little as a month or as long as they want. A USD 9.95 round-trip shipping charge is assessed up front, so when they’re ready for something new, they simply return the item for free and tell Rentobile what to send next.

Launched last year, New Jersey-based Rentobile brings the Netflix model to cell phones, joining a long list of companies that have already brought it to toys, books and snacks, among other goods. All of which should please transumers, consumers who crave opportunities to experience products without contracts or ownership. One to bring to other parts of the world!

With so many companies going to paperless statements and consumers paying their bills using online banking, many people are losing sight of few things. We are losing sight that companies still make many mistakes with their billing, by are adding phantom charges and fees to their consumers. I will show how a colleague saved over $500 within a few hours reviewing her billing statements.

9am- After reviewing her phone statement, she realized the was being charged for two plans. A few months ago she switched long distance plans to save money, but coincidentally the phone provider never removed her previous plan. After disputing these charges, they removed them from her bill, which saved her $32 on her monthly bill, and credited her account for $90 for the previous month’s charges. Total Saved(32 + 90)= $122

10am- Feeling inspired, she checked her past 3 monthly statements of her cell phone statements. She realized that she had consistently exceeded her anytime minutes on her wireless phone plan. After calling the cell phone provider to discuss different plans, she was able to choose a plan that gave her more minutes, and $20 cheaper. Also, prior to accepting the new plan she asked if the new plan could be added retroactively, which would rescind her overages charges from previous 3 months….and they agreed!! The only caveat was that she had to sign an one year contract to get her current plan. Total Saved($20 + 120)= $140.

Noon- A few months ago my colleague had minor outpatient surgery. When she received her hospital bill from health insurance provider, she was charged $600. After reviewing her statement, she realized the insurance company charged her for a procedure that was not done on her. After disputing the bill, and a minor battle with her health insurance provider they amended the bill, and her the amount she owed decreased by $250. Note… When dealing with hospital bills always ask for itemized statement so you can verify every charge. Total Saved = $250.

So if you think reviewing your billing statements are not necessary, think again! Just allocate a few hours every month to review your bills, and you will certainly come out on top.

Due to the financial woes companies are experiencing with our economy, many are shutting down their reward program packages to their consumers. For example, have you tried to claiming any frequent flier miles lately? Coincidently, cash back reward programs via credit cards have become increasing popular among credit card holders.

Typically in the past, cash back credit cards were giving cardholders meager rebates of 1% on all or most of your purchases. However, if you check some of the reward programs these days you will see some offers giving back 3-5% rebates on many purchases (i.e-gas, groceries, and utilities).

Because these credit cards usually charge higher interest rates, rewards card tend to be the most suitable for consumers who pay off their entire balance every month. Cardholders who like to carry revolving debt would be wise to choose a card with a low interest rate. The majority of all reward card programs are usually not appealing for these type of cardholders.(Possible exception: Discover Motiva Card- see below)

Relatively, many cash back reward programs are usually only appealing to big spenders because they cap the rebate amount you can receive in any month and/or in a year, and a few pay back a relatively small percentage until a certain spending level is reached.

In general, try to stay clear of reward cards who try to tack on annual fees on your statements. Also, be weary of reward cards that expire if they are not used within a specific time frame, or make it difficult to redeem points on the card. Unless the reward programs have especially attracting features (like a high rebate of 5%), I would bury these programs in the sand…

Now for the good news!! I have found and signed up to a few cash back reward cards which offer attractive features and no annual fees(unless offers have recently changed as of today….) Take at look at the cash back rewards cards below, and tell what you think. Also, if you have chance you should check cashback offers at MyMoneyBlog. Also, an additional $50 is place in your savings account when you make your first purchase. The OneCard hits you with a $35 annual fee, but that is waived in the first year (just make sure they do).

So I wouldn’t sign up for this card if you like paying off your balances every month. This card is more suitable for cardholders who do not pay off their card in full every month, and carry a balance. The Motiva Card currently charges a 4% APR(annual percentage rate) for the first 6 months and 12 months on balance transfers. After the introductory period, the APR goes up from 11% to 19%.
